September is a great month for fall activities! One of the most beautiful activities in the Kingdom right now is a fall nature walk collecting autumn leaves, acorns, pinecones, and other items.
Another favorite activity is to paint Autumn leaves. Here is how:
Autumn Leaves Painting
MATERIALS:
-
Leaves (the fresher and less brittle the better)
-
Easel paper (or other thin-ish paper)
-
Tape
-
Crayons
-
Watercolor paint in Autumn colors (liquid watercolor paint works great)
-
Vegetable oil (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Arrange your leaves together on the table, vein side up. Place the sheet of paper over the leaves and tape down the corners to hold it in place. (You can even tape the leaves down by the stems if you like, although we don’t usually bother.)
2. Using the broad side of an unwrapped crayon—or a crayon rock—rub firmly over the paper to reveal the leaf skeletons. Use different crayon colors if desired.
3. Paint over the crayon leaf rubbings with watercolor paint for a crayon resist effect.
Watch the watercolors bead up and slide off the crayon lines yet soak into the paper.
Milkshake Ice Lollies!
Alise and Lucas really enjoy making these treats for everyone. Filled with a delicious fruity flavor, this easy to make treat is a great way to cool down in sunny weather.
INGREDIENTS:
-
2 Cups (400g) Strawberries
-
7 oz (200ml) Semi Skimmed Milk
-
2 Cups (405g) Light Condensed Milk
DIRECTIONS:
1. Hull the strawberries before blitzing them in a blender and put them in a mixing bowl.
2. Add the milk and condensed milk to the strawberries and mix well.
3. Pour the mixture into ice lolly molds.
4. Freeze for four hours until solid.
5. Warm the molds using your hands or warm water to ease the lollies out of the mold.
If you don't have an ice lolly mold, you can use an ice cube tray and make milkshake cubes and enjoy them straight from the mold or add them to a bowl of ice cream just like Queen Uberta. Speed prefers to just chill the mix and drink a delicious milkshake.
How will you enjoy your milkshake lolly this summer?
Did you know?
September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day. This day celebrates the history and speech from the Golden Age of Pirates. It's a silly, but fun thing to celebrate.
How to Talk Like a Pirate:
-
First off, you need to growl a lot and sort of yell your words with a scowl on your face. Say "Arrrrr!" every now and then and gesture a lot.
-
Always say "me" not "my". For example, you would say "This is me ship", not "This is my ship".
Here are some words and phrases you can use to participate in this day:
-
Ahoy! - Hello
-
Aye! - Yes
-
Booty - Treasure
-
Colors - Flag
-
Matey - Shipmate or friend
-
Hearties - Friends
-
Lass - woman or girl
-
Avast! - Stop
-
Blimey! - Something to say when frustrated
-
Savvy? - Do you understand?
-
Shiver me timbers! - Something to say when you are surprised
-
Yo-ho-ho - Something to say when happy
-
Ye - Use this instead of "you"
-
Aft - The back of the ship
-
Bilge - Bottom of the ship
-
Fore - Front of the ship
-
Port - Left side of the ship
-
Starboard - Right side of the ship
-
Buccaneer - Another name for a pirate
-
Lad - Young man
-
Scallywag - Someone you don't trust
-
Shanty - Song
-
Cutlass - Pirate's sword
-
Doubloons - Gold coins or money
-
Jolly Roger - The flag of a pirate ship
-
Hornswaggle - Cheat someone
-
Marooned - To get stuck on a desert island
-
Walk the plank - To be forced to walk off a plank of the ship into the ocean
-
Weigh Anchor - Get the ship ready to sail
You can imagine this is one of Alise and Lucas' favorite holidays of the year. They even have a movie to prove it!
